Helping understand Pragmatism. Rudolph Serrato#11

William James lecture on Pragmatism is a big subject to cover in one post. In fact, you can study this subject everyday for the rest of your life and your views of Pragmatism will change along the way, depending on your experiences and results. I believe that William James would agree that is a pragmatic practice of pragmatism. I wanted to share various sources of information that helped me understand pragmatism a little clearer.

Pragmatism can be used everyday in life and applied to many aspects of life such as religion, how a person feels, perspective, decision making, and much more. Essentially its not just a way to look at life but a tool to help you navigate through life. Pragmatism can be used to help a person make the best decisions for the best outcome by looking at all possibilities. Using Pragmatism in life can help guide an individual through difficult times. How does a person use Pragmatism in real life? Chances are, if your like me... you already have been using pragmatism to make decision and didn't even know it.

James views pragmatism as a process of mediating between different philosophies. Pragmatism considers how useful a philosophy is based on how well the results are. Opposed to empiricism who put an emphasis on experience as the true test for truth. James believed that different systems of thought should be tested instead of relying on old information regurgitated from old idealist and rationalist. During the Eight lectures James touches on the core concept of pragmatism and describes the results when using the pragmatic method in different areas of thought. Some areas of thought that James spoke about were religion, truths, and reality to name a couple. James, Dewey, and Pierce all felt that pragmatism is the best philosophy because it was modern and led to a complete thought process rather than accepting truths through experience. Pragmatism uses a combination of common sense and old philosophies to help work through the pragmatic process to arrive at the true truth.
