Don't outsource your thinking

I Teach Creative Writing. This Is What A.I. Is Doing to Students

…What we stand to lose is not just a skill but a mode of being: the pleasure of invention, the felt life of the mind at work. I am a writer because I know of no art form or technology more capable than the book of expanding my sense of what it means to be alive.

Will the wide-scale adoption of A.I. produce a flatlining of thought, where there was once the electricity of creativity? It is a little bit too easy to imagine that in a world of outsourced fluency, we might end up doing less and less by ourselves, while believing we've become more and more capable.

As ChatGPT once put it to me (yes, really): "Style is the imprint of attention. Writing as a human act resists efficiency because it enacts care." Ironically accurate, the line stayed with me: The machine had articulated a crucial truth that we may not yet fully grasp...

Reminder: writing is thinking. This article in Nature is doing the rounds — noting that outsourcing writing to LLMs is THE SAME AS OUTSOURCING THINKING. “Writing compels us to think — not in the chaotic, non-linear way our minds typically wander, but in a structured, intentional manner.” There has never been a more important time than right now to pick up a pen and engage in the act of creation.

  1. Not all hope is lost... I am a creative writer in my free time and chatGPT helps me world-build and I can get incredibly complex having my virtual assistent build me a "wookiepedia" for my world. Currently working on a corny sci-fi novel and I have a lot of fun running my ideas by chatGPT and having it proofread.

AI is philosophically similar t nuclear power or other modern marvels like CRISPR and gene editing tech. It is insanely powerful so therefor must be approached with wisdom, infinite clean energy and a chance at energy equity vs Chernobyl or Fukashima. It's all about the wisdom and care we take approaching and wielding this power. It is a brave new world so we must brave as well, in our use of this powerful tech.

There exists and ethical way to use chatGPT in academia but your goal must be to learn and not to cheat.

All this to say... True artists will always produce original work. Netflix and Paramount on the other hand AI is likely to be producing a lot of that stuff. Support the indy community in all forms of art!

    1. To follow up... I CANT control how others use AI, but I can control how I use it. I am a meliorist in that sense. I can't make legislation to make use of deepfakes illegal, but I can use it to proofread my essays and tell me where I am being convulted, longwinded, where is my tone shifting abnormally (writing center is a great resource for this as well) and how I can be more on topic. Grammarly already does these things (with use of AI btw) but you have to pay for it.

We all have to be the change we want to see and encourage others to the same.
