Whether you lean more towards a belief in free will or determinism, I agree that giving up hope in free will is detrimental. My dad says, “If you think you can or you think you can’t, you’re right.” This has resonated with me. Even if it isn’t possible, why not try? It sounds like cheesy “you miss all the shots you don’t take” stuff, but it’s pretty true. We mentioned in class how depressing it would be to believe that you had absolutely no power in your own life. Personally, rash self-belief has served me well. Even if I don’t hit those insanely high goals, I get further than expected every time.
