A.I. can be a learning tool for schools with enough teachers and resources to use it well.
"...When I asked ChatGPT a range of questions — about the ethical challenges faced by journalists who work with hacked materials, the necessity of cryptocurrency regulation, the possibility of democratic backsliding in the United States — the answers were cogent, well reasoned and clear. It's also interactive: I could ask for more details or request changes.
But then, on trickier topics or more complicated concepts, ChatGPT sometimes gave highly plausible answers that were flat-out wrong — something its creators warn about in their disclaimers.
Unless you already knew the answer or were an expert in the field, you could be subjected to a high-quality intellectual snow job.
You would face, as Plato predicted, "the show of wisdom without the reality."
All this, however, doesn't mean ChatGPT — or similar tools, because it's not the only one of its kind — can't be a useful tool in education.
Schools have already been dealing with the internet's wealth of knowledge, along with its lies, misleading claims and essay mills..."

I personally have no clue what ChatGPT is but from the reading I am assuming that it is a learning tool that students use. As a student I can say that I have used the internet many times to help me with assignments and not all websites have informed information on them. I like to use multiple sites for the same topic so I can compare and contrast the information given to me and have some semblance of what is true and what is speculated from the websites I am using to help me.
ReplyDeleteI like how the Washington Post discusses AI besides academia. That AI should be used for exploration and brainstorming not truth seeking. They give an example of creating an invitation that sounds like a Victoria secrets ad. But they mention that for people who struggle with written or spoken communication this could be useful for them.

DeleteI personally compare ChatGPT to a similar concept designed for the chess world known as StockFish. It's critical "thinking" and knowledge of the game already far surpasses that of humans. To put it into perspective the ELO rating of an average intermediate level player is around 1000 while the upper levels of grand masters hover around that of 2700, to 2800. StockFish in comparison, has a relative computing power of 3600 making its profound moves seem ridiculous at first glance. ChatGPT provides similar answers that are high level and yet not based in reality. Unlike a chess board, reality needs a different sense of reasoning. Once that's been discovered I believe the limits of ChatGPT are unimaginable.
ReplyDeleteI feel like ChatGPT and other advanced AI will eventually lead to one of four out comes. 1 There will be a dumbing down of civilization, as people use these Al's to answer trivial questions. 2. A greater distrust of experts. 3. The eventual extinction of man through Al having too much power, and killing all humanity. 4. The destruction of large scale Al similar to what happened in the DUNE novel.

DeleteChatGPT is just by itself is just an algorithm that uses the vast amount of data in our internet. Plato would be astonished about this but nonetheless also be disappointed on the facts that ChatGPT is only using the internet's knowledge
