Wow, these are very interesting videos thank you for sharing! It was very enjoyable and shocking watching theses and learning more about these philosophers and their backgrounds and thoughts.
Epicurus Video- Epicurus believed that people made 3 mistakes about happiness and that the only things that you need to be happy are friendship, the sense that you are helping yourself or others, and calmness in your own mind. One point that was interesting to me about Epicurus's philosophy is that he believed that friendship made people happier than romantic and sexual relationships. This idea makes me wonder if the marriage rates dropped when the Epicurus communities were at their height.
Stoics Video- The Stoics believed that hope is the drug of emotions and that it must be tossed aside in order to achieve inner peace. Instead of having hope you should tell yourself that everything will be bad, but you are strong enough to get through it. The Stoics believed that one of the best ways to achieve inner peace was to learn how to control your emotions and to learn to control your emotions you should rehearse worse-case scenarios. Based on this idea do you think that this would cause people to lose authenticity?

ReplyDeleteI found this video interesting because I had similar thoughts to stoics but not to their extreme.
