Midterm blog post
Michael Clancy: Good Morning everyone! My name is Michael Clancy, the host of the top youtube morning podcast in existence, more back less legs. Today we are challenged with discussing the various beliefs and backings of different philosophical beliefs. We are joined by three excellent guests, known for their diverse philosophical beliefs and opinions. First we have Nigel Warburton who is a british philosopher known as “The populariser or philosophy”. He has written a number of books over the topic such as; Thinking from A to Z, and Philosophy Bites. Next we have Kurt Anderson who is an American writer and host of an award winning radio show titled Studio 360. Finally we have Julian Baggini who is also a british philosopher who has written over twenty books. He is also the co-founder of The philosophers magazine. Thank you all for putting aside your time to come in today!
Kurt Anderson: Thank you for having me!
Nigel Warburton: It's an honor to be invited out!
Julian Baggini: The pleasure is all mine, I can't wait to start!
The first question I want to ask you all is Do you think philosophy can help people learn to respect truth, facts, reality, and one another, and to reject falsehood, superstition, selfishness, polarization, partisanship, and mutual hostility based on differences of race, religion, ethnicity, nationality, belief, etc.? If so, how? If not, why not? I will give you some thime to think about that question while we watch this video real quick.
Kurt Anderson: In my book “Fantasyland” I talk about how America is made up of such a largely diverse group of people, which allow for many different opinions of thinking to any given topic. This allows for the creation of many different fantasy lands, which were individuals who grouped together because of common interests. This allowed people to connect on a common level of philosophical beliefs.
Nigel Warburton: You make some great points Kurt. In my book “A Little History of Philosophy” I talk a lot about how older philosophers such as Socrates and Aristotle laid the foundations for the life questions we still ponder on today. By looking back at how older philosophers tackled these questions we can expand on the ideas of others. I think Philosophy can explain a lot of the various questions about the meaning and purpose of life.
Julian Baggini: You both make excellent points. The way that I interpret this question is to really become a well rounded philosopher, you have to adopt a mindset of multiple perspectives. This means that to truly understand a concept you have to be able to see all of the different sides. By having multiple perspectives it allows us to respect and understand one another on a much deeper level.
Michael Clancy: Those were all great responses to that question! Very well spoken and well thought out. I was watching this video the other day and by the end I kept thinking to myself these questions. The last question I have for you all is What do you think this world is going to be? What is life to eventually make of itself?
Kurt Anderson: I would say that for the future for America change needs to happen fast. People are always so fast to develop opinions and think that their way is the only way that it will over create a deeper wedge between each other. Nobody takes the time anymore to understand each other's point of view which will eventually cause a huge division in our country.
Nigel Warburton: I think that to identify a true answer to this question you have to continue to look into the past. You must learn and listen to others to get a well rounded opinion. I think life itself will eventually come full circle, but a true purpose may never expose itself. Instead you have to create your own meaning of life.
Julian Baggini: I believe that as time progresses so will the ability of people to adopt a multiple perspective mindset. I hope that people will begin to be more understanding and open to having conversations with others that have different views. This will allow for a culture that can progress and get along aside from differences they might have.
Michael Clancy: Those are some great answers again! Thank you all for your time today.
The only other scores I used for this assignment was to read over their wikipedia pages to get a better idea of who these philosophers are.

ReplyDeleteRemember the instruction to give at least a brief summary description of video contents: why should we view them? Who in present company doesn't know what philosophy is? What's Aristotle's specific contribution to the conversation?
ReplyDelete"fantasy lands, which were individuals who grouped together because of common interests" - that's not quite it.
"life itself will eventually come full circle" - meaning?
"as time progresses so will the ability of people to adopt a multiple perspective mindset" - why? how?
