A lively Library
It was a cold October night, I was walking to the MTSU library to get some homework done after my class ended at nine o’clock. Once I walked in a found a nice spot on the fourth floor I hear a commotion coming from a nearby conference room. I walk over and find three men arguing loudly in a conference room I begin to ask what is going on in here. The three men all stop and look at me and they introduce themselves as Nigel Warburton, Kurt Anderson, and Julian Baggini. Realizing who they were from my philosophy class , I decided to sit in and listen to their debate. I asked them what they were debating about and Kurt responded “we are discussing How do we think philosophy can help people learn to respect truth, facts, reality, and one another.” “Now where were we “says Kurt, “ I believe that philosophy has the ability to help people overcome this false reality and allow us to have a better balance between reality and our imagination”. “Now Kurt” says Nigel “this is not some fantasy land where we live in these false realities however, I agree that philosophy will bring us closer as a human race due to the need to search for the truth and finding truth whether it be a greater truth or a personal truth it will all bring us together”. “Well Nigel .. philosophy and the search of answers as we all know has been around for as long as the first human being in caves but expanding on your answer. The human race has also looked to find the answers from watching others and from that we are able to better understand others and therefore ourselves better than we did before making us better humans in the process,” says Julian. Now moving on How do you all feel the world is going to be or make of itself in this modern time? Kurt rushing to get his answer out “Well I personally think the only way to better is if we stop questioning what is real then and only then do I see the fate of humanity turning out well”. “Okay I see where you are coming from,” said Julian. “Now I believe in humanity, and currently there is so much turmoil in the world right now but I do think at some point in the future that we will all be able to come one and enjoy a world of peace and understanding!” Now Nigel what are your thoughts on the question? “Well I like you Julian feel like we are going to become a more unified world but by means of cooperation and discussion , so if or when we come to a problem we are able to solve it together without much conflict,” said Nigel. Hold on we forgot to hear from you, Nate was it? Yes, I did not think I should have talked with such great minds. On the topic of the first question I believe the search for truth is universal so with that being said I think philosophy will most certainly help us understand people and the reality we all know leading to a better world now will it be an easy ride to that point no but I still believe it is ultimately possible! For the last question It is hard to tell my hopes is that the world will become a more peaceful place full of understanding but we as a human race are flawed we are not perfect beings so to be able to predict the outcome of the world is like trying to count how many drops of water is in the ocean. All we can do is hope that the world will turn out right in the end. Thank you for letting me sit in on you three while having your debate and I would love to do this again sometime but for now I have to go!
"the only way to better is if we stop questioning what is real" - That's the last thing Kurt Andersen, or any philosopher really, would ever say.
ReplyDelete"the reality we all know" - we do not, evidently
"All we can do is hope that the world will turn out right in the end" - well we're really screwed then, aren't we?
