I believe we have all been confronted or invited into these seemingly complex conversations that involve topics such as: religion, origins, evolution, etc.
Some of these conversations can feel encouraging and informative;
others can feel irritating and repetitive.
Most people forget about the pleasant possibility of the former since they are focusing on the uncomfortable risk of the later. I think this happens because its difficult to manage/control/navigate these types of conversations. That feeling of helplessness can trick people to dwell on the worse-case scenarios.
Right now you may be asking, "why am I telling you this?" It's simple. Nothing is predetermined from the human experience. Once you understand this, you can learn new skills and get past your mental-hurdles. In this case, helplessness.
So coming back to the main topic, there are some tools I like to use in these types of conversations to encourage the energy of the discussion to remain positive and the nature to remain productive or informative.
- Reframing Questions
- Asking "Why?"
- Asking a person "why they want to discuss a topic" can encourage a conversation to be logical.
- It can also stop a conversation from circling around a topic.
- Speaking at a Normal Volume and Normal Speed
- This could also mean using your opportunity to speak in order to lower the volume and slow the tempo of the conversation.
