A collaborative search for wisdom, at Middle Tennessee State University and beyond... "The pluralistic form takes for me a stronger hold on reality than any other philosophy I know of, being essentially a social philosophy, a philosophy of 'co'"-William James
One thing in todays reading that I thought was interesting was that philosophers can be motivated by religion and of course after hearing this I went obviously. From Muslim, to Buddhist, to Catholics religious philosophers existed. Which raised the question is there a connection between religion and philosophy?
Yes. Mine is a Department of Religion and Philosophy. The connections have to do with the sorts of questions we ask in both domains, having to do with the sources of meaning, purpose, value, ethics, reality, truth, etc. Some philosophers believe in god, some don't. Some religionists believe truth can be established independent of specific religious dogmas, others don't. So there's overlap, but not identity. I'd say that philosophy, the search for wisdom, is in some ways logically prior to religion: people have asked philosophical questions longer than they've proposed religious answers.
