The original freethinker

Socrates didn't leave behind any writings but nearly two and a half thousand years after his death, we're still talking about him.  Why is that?  To borrow a phrase from Nietzsche: Socrates pressed his hand upon millenia as though upon wax.  His influence permeates Western civilization but today we have largely forgotten who he really was, and what he represented.  Socrates was the man who brought philosophy down from the heavens and applied it, like a psychotherapist, to our everyday problems, by challenging our assumptions, and forcing us to look twice at our deepest values.  He is the original model of the freethinker, and we can learn from him, not what to think, but how to think.
