...That Jimmy Kimmel and Stephen Colbert are salient targets of the right wing's free-speech hypocrisy tells you a lot about the right wingers themselves: their thin-skinned insecurity and sense of inadequacy. Stung by being exposed by these sharp-witted and eloquent individuals, their response is to lash out: the bully's way. I think it is a safe bet that Kimmel and Colbert will be far more fondly remembered by history than those currently trying to repress them. Or, indeed, than any whom the right wingers fete for purposes of weaponisation.

It is ironic that the "bastion of free speech" passing away has caused a much more limited platform for free speech. I am reminded of the MTSU dean of students who was fired for her take on the issue, mostly because she extended no sympathy to a person who personally was held in low regard to her. I also remember when the Minnesota senator was murdered, the press coverage was extremely limited, yet the right continued to mock and ridicule the victims and their supporters. I sense that we are moving in a much scarier direction, where you cannot call out the coveting of a person who, by most standards, was not as impactful as he is being represented. Free speech is for all, no matter what you have to say.
ReplyDeleteI think that the line of free speech is being pushed and blurred currently. But free speech is does mean speech without its consequences. While it may be an overreaction, speech still comes with its consequences.
