Just ahead is the story of a 7-year-old girl she calls Julie Norwich, who gets safely to ground after her father’s light plane clips a line of fir trees on takeoff, only to have her face burned off by a splurt of hot fuel.
Which brings Ms. Dillard once more head-to-head with a question known to religious thinkers as the problem of evil: Could it possibly be that a loving, all-powerful God allows bad things to happen just to make goodness stand out in sharper relief?
